Judge Daniel F. Folley Memorial Scholarship

It is with immense pleasure that we announce the Daniel F. Foley Memorial Scholarship available to direct descendants (children, grandchildren, great grandchildren) of members of The Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada attending ANY year of University or College courses leading to a degree or diploma.

The scholarship has been created by ANAVICUS, which is The Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada-United States Unit created within the American Legion to foster a goodwill partnership between veterans of the United States and Canada.

The late Judge Foley was President of ANAVICUS for over 20 years and many members would remember his stalwart support of our Association as well as his great humour as he attended many of our Dominion Conventions over the years.

The Scholarship of $1000.00 USD will be awarded annually in his name and the recipient will be chosen by the ANAVETS Board of Directors’ at their annual board meeting in September. Colonel Frank R. Kossa Memorial Scholarship

The “Frank Kossa – ANAVETS bursary” is awarded annually in a draw at our annual Board of Director’s meeting. To qualify for the draw, an applicant has to have earned the prestigious Cadet “ANAVETS Medal of Merit” and be entering any year of a University of Community College course leading to a degree or diploma (see note below).

Dominion Civil Service War Veterans’ Association Scholarship

Background

The Dominion Civil Service War Veterans Association (DCSWVA) was formed in 1947 as a non-profit association of World War II Veterans who were employees of the Dominion (of Canada ) Civil Service. In order to perpetuate its legacy, in late 2015, the board of directors voted to donate sum of money to the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS) to establish and manage a trust (DCSWVCT) to institute a scholarship program available to former members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The purpose of the trust is to award scholarships to support, encourage, and promote the education of former members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Regular or Reserve. The scholarship is called: The Dominion Civil Service War Veterans Commemorative Scholarship. The value of the scholarship is $3000.00, spit equally over (2) two consecutive years of studies.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, applicants must be former members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Regular or Reserve component, who have been honourably discharged.
The applicant must not be currently eligible to take part in Service Income Security Insurance Program (SISIP) vocational rehabilitation and/or Veterans Affairs Canada vocational rehabilitation programs.
The recipient must be registered in full or part-time studies at an accredited Canadian university or college in a program leading to a degree or diploma.
The scholarship is awarded only once to each recipient and will be $1,500 annually for a maximum of two years.
The recipient must maintain a 2.5 grade point average at the end of the year completed and must continue to be enrolled in full or part-time studies.
Failure to maintain these conditions will cancel the scholarship for that recipient.

How to apply

Applications for the scholarship are available on the ANAVETS website and must be submitted online.
Deadline to apply is 1 August of each year at 23:59 EST.
Applications may be competed in either official language (English or French).
Applications must include the following documentation:
1. Proof of honourable discharge from the Canadian Armed Forces.
2. Proof of acceptance in a course of study in a Canadian university or College leading to a degree or diploma.
3. A maximum 1000 word essay explaining:
  1. A brief summary of your military service
  2. Financial need

Guidelines for application

By submitting an application, the applicant certifies that all information provided is accurate and complete to the best of their knowledge, understanding the provision of false information will render them ineligible for the scholarship.
By submitting an application, the applicant authorizes ANAVETS and its employees, agents and affiliates to release any information provided in or relating to this scholarship application to its representatives, scholarship administrators, DCSWVCT trustees and respective representatives who need to know such information for the purposes of administering, adjudicating and promoting this scholarship.
By submitting an application, the applicant hereby authorizes ANAVETS, the Scholarship Administrator and representatives to collect, use, store and confirm information about the applicant with third parties, such as colleges, universities, government departments and community sources for the purposes on administering and promoting this scholarship program.
The applicant hereby authorizes third parties such as universities, government or community sources to release information to ANAVETS, the Scholarship Administrator and respective representatives who need to know such information for purposes of administering the DCSWVCT scholarship. This information may include personal evaluation or transcripts, discharge verification and program entitlements.In the event that the applicant becomes a scholarship recipient, the applicant authorizes ANAVETS the worldwide right to use the applicants name, image, likeness, city and province or residence, university name and any direct quotes made by the applicant in respect of the Scholarship program for marketing and publicity purposes in any and all media without further compensation.

ANAVETS as the Scholarship Administrator and the trustees of the DCSWVCT reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to modify, amend (including the application deadline) or cancel this Scholarship program at any time without individual notice.
